Activation Thought Exercise: For Stigmatized Grief

(Suicide, Overdose, Culturally Judged Losses – Casey Corbin | From Good to Great)

Begin by arriving in your body
You don’t have to be calm yet
You don’t even have to be ready
Just be here
That’s enough
[Longer Pause]

Let your breath find you
Soft and unforced
Just let the inhale show up
And let the exhale lengthen
[Longer Pause]

This kind of grief is complicated
It doesn’t always get the rituals it deserves
It doesn’t always get the understanding it needs
[Longer Pause]

Sometimes the world treats it like it shouldn’t be spoken
Sometimes even well-meaning people say things that deepen the wound
Or worse—say nothing at all
[Longer Pause]

You may have felt invisible
Or judged
Or ashamed for still loving them
[Longer Pause]

You may have wondered if you’re allowed to talk about it
If it’s okay to miss them this much
If it’s okay to still carry them
[Longer Pause]

Let me say this clearly now
You are allowed to grieve
You are allowed to remember
You are allowed to love them
[Longer Pause]

No one else has to understand it
This is your process
Your relationship
Your healing
[Longer Pause]

You may carry questions that never got answers
You may carry stories others tried to erase
But you are still here
Still breathing
Still connected
[Longer Pause]

So let’s start gently
Let your mind soften
Let your body settle
[Longer Pause]

And now, in your mind, begin to count backwards from 100 by sevens
Just let your thoughts follow
100
[Longer Pause]
93
[Longer Pause]
86
[Longer Pause]

If the numbers get tangled, let them
If your mind wanders, let it
There’s no goal here
Only the process
[Longer Pause]

As your mind softens
you may notice a part of you that’s been on guard
The part that has been defending this loss
Explaining it
Justifying your grief
Trying to prove your love
Trying to prove your right to mourn
[Longer Pause]

Let that part take a breath
Let it unclench, just a little
[Longer Pause]

You’ve done nothing wrong by grieving
You’ve done nothing wrong by remembering
You don’t have to justify love
[Longer Pause]

Now bring to mind a moment
Something someone said
Or didn’t say
A time when you felt dismissed
Judged
Ignored
[Longer Pause]

Let yourself acknowledge the impact
Without minimizing it
[Longer Pause]

And now—see yourself holding that moment in your hands
And as you breathe out
Let it fall to the earth
It doesn’t belong in your body anymore
[Longer Pause]

You can forgive what was said
Not because it was okay
But because you’re not carrying that energy any longer
[Longer Pause]

You can release the silence
The looks
The assumptions
The opinions that were never asked for
[Longer Pause]

You can say
That was their misunderstanding
Not my burden
[Longer Pause]

There is nothing shameful about grief
And there is nothing shameful about this loss
[Longer Pause]

You may still carry questions
But today, you also carry love
And that love didn’t end
[Longer Pause]

Let yourself feel the presence of the person you lost
Not how they died
But how they lived
[Longer Pause]

What made them laugh
What made them feel safe
What mattered to them
What mattered between you
[Longer Pause]

You’re not rewriting the ending
You’re reclaiming the middle
[Longer Pause]

Now gently notice the part of you that has been silenced
The part that held this pain in secret
The one that tried to stay small to make others comfortable
[Longer Pause]

There’s another part of you present now
One that wants to breathe again
To be seen
To speak
To remember out loud
[Longer Pause]

Let those two parts face each other now
The quiet one
And the one who’s ready
[Longer Pause]

Say to the part that has held this alone
I understand you
[Longer Pause]
I accept you
[Longer Pause]
I love you
[Longer Pause]
I forgive you
[Longer Pause]

Let them move toward each other now
As slowly as they need
Merging not to erase the pain
But to bring it home
[Longer Pause]

You are allowed to remember
You are allowed to tell the truth
You are allowed to carry this in a way that feels right for you
[Longer Pause]

And now imagine yourself weeks or months from now
Able to speak about this loss
Not with shame
But with clarity
[Longer Pause]

Still holding love
Still honoring their memory
Still feeling
But no longer tangled in what others believe
[Longer Pause]

You are creating a new space for grief
One where truth and tenderness live together
[Longer Pause]

Let your hand touch your heart
And feel the warmth that’s still there
That’s connection
That’s permission
[Longer Pause]

Now I’ll count from 1 to 5
Each number brings you back to the room
Clearer
Softer
Stronger
[Longer Pause]

1 — your breath deepening
[Longer Pause]
2 — your limbs grounding into the body
[Longer Pause]
3 — your chest opening
[Longer Pause]
4 — your awareness returning
[Longer Pause]
5 — your eyes open
You are here
You are whole
You are allowed
[Longer Pause]

You’ve done beautiful work
