Interventions -like the show on A&E and in movies. Do they really work?

INTERVENTIONS!  Wow, even the word is intimidating.  I've been a counselor working with addiction for 25 years now.  In working with thousands of clients and their families. I've facilitated many interventions.  Do they work?  Are they as dramatic as on TV or in movies?

INTERVENTIONS!  Wow, even the word is intimidating.  I've been a counselor working with addiction for 25 years now.  In working with thousands of clients and their families. I've facilitated many interventions.  Do they work?  Are they as dramatic as on TV or in movies?

Well, because nearly everyone in our culture lacks an understanding of addiction, what works and what doesn't.  Yet everyone is affected either directly or indirectly by addiction.  So -you need to know!  :)

Interventions can be done in different ways.  I can do the traditional Johnson Institute Model --which is what you may see on TV and in movies.  A specially trained counselor like myself meets with the families and friends for weeks ahead of time to:

  • prep them on what to do,

  • how to write letters to the addicted loved one, and

  • get everyone on the same page.

Then we coordinate a time to corner the addict with the intention of pressuring them to leave right then to go into the residential program.  Whew!  It's a lot of work --and doesn't work most of the time.  My fee for those starts at $1,500 upfront and then add additional sessions as needed.

Better alternative:  As you may have already gleaned from my info about the Beast Brain concept, in that type of stressful confrontation, their Neocortex will shut down and their Beast Brain will take over and say anything to get out of going to treatment, make promises that they won't keep, plead, cry, pray, ...whatever it takes to get one more minute of 'freedom' ...but the moment eyes are off them they charge toward alcohol, drugs, porn, shopping --whatever is their DOC (Drug Of Choice) like a savage beast.

But that is not the real person that you love!

What I have found works much better is keeping them calm and in their real brain (Neocortex).  That means not activating Flight or Flight with a stressful confrontation.  The goal is to get them clean enough, long enough, so the real person stays in charge of their own brain so they make healthy decisions that lead toward long-term recovery.

How's this work?  I meet with you to work on you.  I meet with other friends ad family members to work on themselves -focusing on their own health first.  As everyone gets healthier and informed they naturally enable less and less.  Over a gradual period of time 'healthy detachment" takes place instead of "unhealthy abandonment."  The addict is given no 'wiggle room' and has to change. This is a kinder and gentler approach for all involved.  It's also less expensive -and less drama in your life.

To the friends and family of an addict, I know you are tired and want a quick fix, but honestly, that only happens on TV.

I offer a program with individual sessions that are supported by the dozens of 'mini-courses' on my site.  The videos, audio, and text content has been my way of automating about 80% of what I used to do in-session with my clients.  This means we are more efficient and effective at getting to a solution!  More info about my program here:  https://www.caseycolecorbin.com/coaching-clients

At the link, you will find the details about a FREE consult session with me.

Additionally, if you email me I'll send you the 3 videos I made on understanding the Beast Brain in these scenarios for free.
